Knox Boxes
Knox boxes are secure boxes used to house occupancy/tenant access keys. Access to knox boxes are strictly limited to fire department personnel only via a computer tracked password program.
Buildings/occupancies with a fire alarm or sprinkler system shall have at least one knox box installed at their expense. The knox boxes shall contain clearly labeled keys providing access to all areas of the occupancy, including fire alarm control panels and pull stations. Typically, new installations of knox boxes will be located such that they are near the entry point for immediate access to the fire alarm control panel and/or annunciator.
Knox boxes are obtained from the Knox Company via the Oswego Fire Prevention Bureau at 3511 Woolley Road in Oswego. Orders will not be placed with the Knox Company until payment is received. Payment at time of order can be made via credit card (AMEX, Discover, Visa, or Mastercard), money order, or check made out to Knox Company.
Cash will not be accepted as a form of payment.
The installation and maintenance of the box is the responsibility of the owner. The operator of the building/tenant space shall immediately notify the fire department and provide a new key when a lock is changed, re-keyed, and/or added to the facility. This key shall then be secured in the knox box.
Prices and styles of boxes can be obtained by calling the Fire Prevention Bureau or accessing the Knox Company website. Typical and approximate costs and styles as of January 2010 are as follows:
Surface-mount: @ $250
Recessed-mount: @ $295

Asmall number of surface-mount knox boxes are held in stock within the Fire Prevention Bureau and are first-come, first-serve. Otherwise, delivery time from time of order to delivery to the bureau is approximately 3 – 4 weeks.
