Outdoor Bonfire Permit Application
In addition to any such documentation and paperwork so required from the local building and zoning authorities, applications for erecting and conducting a bonfire – which is defined as having an area greater than three (3) feet and/or a height greater than two (2) feet - shall adhere to the following:
a) Permit required from local building & zoning official
b) Name, address, and contact information of the individual, group, or organization sponsoring the outdoor bonfire shall be made available
c) Open burning that is or can become offensive or objectionable because of smoke, odor emissions, or fueling material, whether it be due to weather or local circumstances, will be denied
d) Bonfire locations shall be approved
o Not within 50’ from structures and/or combustible materials unless contained within a barbecue pit
o Provisions made to prevent fire from spreading to within 50’ of structures and/or combustible materials – such conditions shall be eliminated prior to ignition
e) Bonfires that become dangerous, offensive, or objectionable will be required to be immediately extinguished
f) Bonfires shall be constantly attended until fire is completely extinguished. Attendance shall be by a competent person(s) willing and able to take responsibility and action if so required.
g) Sufficient fire-extinguishing equipment/provisions shall be on site and immediately available for utilization
h) The Oswego Fire Protection District shall not be involved in the planned erection, ignition, or extinguishment of bonfires
i) It shall be clearly understood that all responsibility and liability with regard to an approved bonfire, as well as any actions stemming from it, remains solely with the sponsor/permit holder
